Emulating Marilyn

I know I just posted my Art Saturday post, but I couldn’t not post this because well… I love the 50′s style I automatically love her style even though I will never be as well styled as she was but hey a girls gotta have inspiration right? Not surprisingly fashion is taking a tip from one of it’s all time favorite ladies.  Check out some Marilyn inspired looks…which one do ya’ll like best?

THE SIREN

How Marilyn Wore It: InHow to Marry a Millionaire, MM played the lovable, bumbling blond looking for love—and dough—in a dress built to showcase every inch of her 37″-23″-36″.

How Joe Zee styled It: The hourglass is alive and well in this J. Mendel gown. It mimics the one-shoulder detail of the original, but for modern measure, I prefer the front slit and, of course, royal blue Manolos.

THE INGENUE

How Marilyn Wore It: In this 1951 portrait, MM plays coy with a key ’50s silhouette—high-rise shorts and a fitted sweater—and a knowing wink.

How Joe Zee styled It: There’s no shortage of this shape on the spring runways, especially the high waist. I freshened up the look (Burberry Prorsum sweater, Cacharel shorts) with—gasp!—flats. Barefoot Marilyn would approve.

THE PINUP

How Marilyn Wore It: This is how MM did by-the-pool casual. The best part is what you can’t see: She’s wearing Lucite heels!

How Joe Zee styled It: While I love Marilyn’s original suit, today I’d opt for a more flattering cut, such as this Laura Urbinati two-piece. The lower waistline works better for most figures; contrast piping lends sharper, more graphic detail.

THE INCOGNITO

How Marilyn Wore It:Today, starlets run from the paparazzi in jeans and boots. Marilyn did it the midcentury way, using accessories—and the scarf was key.

How Joe Zee styled It: My first rule for any woman is to invest in the right accents. This black turtleneck and Rachel Roy pants get a lift from her scarf, sunglasses, and flat loafers.

THE SWEATER GIRL

How Marilyn Wore It: In this publicity still from 1954’sRiver of No Return, MM makes even a crewneck and jeans drop-dead sexy.

How Joe Zee styled It: Look for knits with oomph, like this Carven sweater with contrasting sleeves, paired with skinny Sonia Rykiel pants.
