I’ve briefly mentioned this photographer before, she was part of an exhibit I saw at Tate Modern a billion years ago, but I thought her stark portraits warranted a post all of their own. I just can’t get enough of the tonality and character in these images. Rineke Dijkstra (I had to look her up to figure out it is a womans name) is a Dutch photographer who ‘concentrates on single portraits, and usually works in series, looking at groups such as adolescents, clubbers, and soldiers. Her subjects are often shown standing, facing the camera, against a minimal background.’ The beach portraits are probably her most famous, but the ones of the mothers who have just given birth are so impacting as well.

we discussed about her work in school. nice to see them here again

Isn’t she a fabulous photographer? I’m in San Francisco at the moment on holiday and she has a big retrospective on at MOMA. It is absolutely captivating.
